A Blast From the Past

A month or so ago, some one was kind enough to post some photos from what life was like at McMurdo during the 1950's and 1960's. This was when McMurdo Station was first built and the United States Antarctic Program got up and running. I thought it would be interesting to share and show that when it comes down to it, not too much has really changed.

Mcmurdo Station with a fly over. They still do this today, but it's the last flight of the summer season that does it, waving their good-bye.

An LC-130. They still fly them down here today.

Bad things still happen.

We still use Quonset huts and Jamesways.

This would be breaking the Antarctic Treaty today...but it's still tempting to do this! They're just so cute!

We still take photos of penguins.

Some of the buildings still look like this.

The dump is gone and we don't have this many ships in at once, but they still come into this area of Winter's Quarter Bay.

Thankfully this is long gone.

The offloading is still going on today, it's slightly different these days...but still rustic.

Same planes today. Same loading system for the most part.

We still get outfitted in the bunny boots today.

Field Camps still kind of look like this today.

McMurdo Station has grown quite a bit since this.

We still have the Ice Runway.

We still have crazy vehicles that kind of look like this.

There's still a unique kind of humor down here.

Again, having a leash on a penguin would be breaking the Antarctic Treaty today.

There's still women here!

Back when dogs were allowed on the continent.

The Control Tower looks relatively like this today.

We still get this crazy look on our face down here.
